André and Madeleine have been in love for over fifty years. This weekend, as their daughters visit, something feels unusual. A bunch of flowers arrives, but who sent it? A woman from the past turns up, but who is she? And why does André feel like he isn’t there at all?

THE PLAYWRIGHT

Florian Zeller, playwright

Florian Zeller is a French playwright, novelist, and screenwriter. He came to prominence with his third novel, The Fascination of Evil, which was awarded the Prix Goncourt (an esteemed French literary prize). His 2012 play, The Father, won the Molière Award for Best Play and was subsequently translated into English by Christopher Hampton. The English translation garnered critical acclaim both on Broadway and the West End, and was adapted into the 2020 film of the same name. Zeller and Hampton shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for their work on the film. Zeller’s 2017 play, The Truth, won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy, and his subsequent plays include The Height of the Storm (2018), The Mother (2019) and The Son (2019).

THE TRANSLATOR

Christopher Hampton, translator

Christopher Hampton’s plays, musicals and translations have won many awards including four Tonys and three Oliviers. Prizes for his screenplays include an Oscar, Hollywood Screenwriter of the Year and awards at the Cannes and Venice film festivals. Plays include Appomattox, The Talking Cure, Tales from Hollywood, The Philanthropist, Savages, Total Eclipse; adaptations from novels Youth Without God (Horvath), Embers (Marai), Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Laclos); plus translations of plays by Chekhov, Ibsen, Moliere, Horvath, Yasmina Reza and Florian Zeller. Screenplays include Dangerous Liaisons, Atonement, A Dangerous Method, Carrington, The Secret Agent and Imagining Argentina, the last three of which he also directed.
